Frank Strobel
In Germany, Frank Strobel is famous for his work championing a revival of the film music genre. His activities as a composer and conductor take him all over the world. Born in Munich in 1966, he was chief conductor of the Film Orchestra Babelsberg until 1998; he has led the European FilmPhilharmonic in Berlin since the year 2000. This ensemble attained worldwide acclaim with a revival performance of the complete “Metropolis” film by Fritz Lang in February 2010. Thanks to his work on original scores and the creation of new ones, no fewer than 40 silent film classics have been set to music and performed again. In the years 2003 and 2004, he achieved sensational success with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra performing Prokoviev’s “Alexander Nevsky” in Berlin and Moscow. Other highlights include world premieres of works by Schreker, Zemlinsky and Siegfried Wagner. A special artistic relationship linked Strobel with the Russian composer Alfred Schnittke, something reflected in the numerous, spectacular premieres and CD-recordings. In 2009, he conducted the soundtrack to the film “Pope Joan” by Sönke Wortmann.
