RIAS Youth Orchestra
Germany
The RIAS Youth Orchestra was founded in 1948, soon after World War Two, making it one of the oldest youth orchestras in the world. Its foundation was directly connected to the development of RIAS (Radio in the American Sector), as US occupying powers viewed culture - and youth culture in particular – as an especially important socio-political mandate. The orchestra’s sphere of influence extended far beyond Berlin just as it does today; and during the Cold War and the division of Germany it functioned as a musical ambassador and builder of bridges. The reunification of Germany and the basic restructuring of the international youth orchestra landscape also forced the RIAS Youth Orchestra to reposition itself. Today, apart from students from Berlin’s two music academies, the orchestra also includes guest students from some 20 nations; its programmes have always placed a strong accent on new works and premieres. The orchestra is performing for the fourth time at Young Euro Classic.
