National Youth Orchestra of Germany
Germany
The Federal Youth Orchestra, founded in 1969 by the German Music Council, is one of the world’s most important youth orchestras. The ensemble gives Germany’s best upcoming musical talent aged between 14 and 19 the chance to demonstrate their abilities on national and international concert tours under the baton of conducting greats such as Kurt Masur, Gerd Albrecht and Dennis Russell Davies. During the thrice-yearly rehearsal periods, the orchestra rehearses challenging orchestral works from all eras under the guidance of experienced tutors and alternating conductors. Among the orchestra’s most significant projects have been the “Thank You America!”- tour with Kurt Masur to mark the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, a tour “Poland and Germany – Together in the Heart of Europe” with Gerd Albrecht, performances during the German year in Japan 2005/06 and trips to Venezuela with Andris Nelsons and Gustavo Dudamel. At the beginning of 2008, the orchestra worked for the first time with John Neumeier, theatre classes and dancers from the HAMBURG BALLET: Together the ensembles performed Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony and “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”. The orchestra played in 2010 as part of the cultural programme accompanying the soccer world cup in South Africa, and played together with rock legend Sting in Wolfsburg.
